Although I wish we could have seen more of the other characters from Camp Green Lake, I'm glad to have the chance to visit with a few. I was considering reading this with my students after finishing Holes, but I decided against it. Although it was an enjoyable read, there is less educational value for sure.

Near the beginning of the book a teenage girl exposes herself to her bodyguard. Totally unnecessary and inappropriate. Holes was great and family friendly, but unfortunately this book goes a different direction.
This book was amazing, how the author had managed to make such a deep connection and play with it to make it that you can't put the book AT ALL! This book was amazing it would be amazing if there was a follow up for this book but, this book is very old and I'm afraid that won't happen. Louis Sachar all the way!!!
It's like pulling teeth to get my son to read. However, recently he requested "Small Steps" and I couldn't order it fast enough! I was so excited (being a bookworm myself) and he's been reading it on a regular basis since it arrived. He says he gives it 5 out of 5 stars. He sits next to me on the couch reading and giggling. It's fantastic! Did I mention he's 13? I have not read this book myself yet but he tells me it is like the second part to "Holes". I have no idea of the story line. I only know that it is keeping a 13 year old boy away from the X-Box and I love it for that reason alone.

I was expecting it to be more like Holes, our a continuation of the Holes backstory, but this was a nice surprise too. The characters are genuine and endearing.
Since my son read holes at school, she was interested in more books by​ Louis Sachar. He liked this book and the story.
I teach ESL to college students and used this for one of my lower-intermediate classes. Students really liked it, and it has the added advantage of not having a movie or a lot written about it online (so plagiarism on tests, book reports etc is much harder). It's not exactly current, but it connected to some pop culture resources they enjoyed as well. The language is pretty straightfoward without being dull, it's not terribly long or dense--overall a good book for anybody teaching reading skills.
