Brief Summary:Catherine "Cat" Steele enjoys a thriving landscaping business. However, her heart is in flying the bi-plane she has secretly restored with a friend. Why secretly? Her father, William, whom she greatly esteems has an antagonism towards anything to do with planes. Rather than make him unduly stressed, she has kept this part of herself away from him for years--or so she thinks.
One day while Cat is flying her father falls from a ladder and hits his head, which renders him unconscious. Cat arrives at the hospital unsure of the extent of his injuries. As she sees him lying in bed, she faces the possibility of losing the only parent she has ever known. Guilt settles over her as she reprimands herself for being in the air rather than being with him. Meanwhile her father's doctor, Peter Johnson, is stumped as to why William remains in the state of unconsciousness after several hours.
Over the course of the next few days, Peter and Cat come to realize how closely their lives are intertwined with each other without ever having met personally before. Peter¡¦s mother holds the keys to Cat's past which up until this point has been locked away within her father. It is then that Cat learns she hasn't been the only one keeping secrets. As she attempts to solve the family mystery that has clouded their otherwise happy life, she wrestles with the moral dilemmas of having kept her own secret as well.
With the help of friends Cat and William learn to open up, face inner doubts, spiritual questions and reconcile themselves to one another so they can move on from the past. But even more importantly they become reconciled to God through this process. And what about the seeds of romance that have been planted between Cat and Peter? We have to wait for the next book in the series to find out.
Positive Elements:
The attribute of God's faithfulness is clearly evident throughout this novel. I also enjoyed the clear portrayal of seeing faith in action by the words and deeds of the characters.

On Wings to Fly The Wings Trilogy Book 1 edition by Dona Norton Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Dona Norton has written an engaging story about "Cat," a spunky young woman who runs her own successful business and has a passion for flying. When an accident sends her father to the hospital, Cat is led to pursue a family mystery that had clouded her otherwise sunny life, and to wrestle with the moral dilemmas of having kept her own secret as well. One of the best features of the novel is its evocative setting the small towns and natural landscapes of the Champlain Valley of Vermont in 1960, with accurate details of life at that time, allusions to the wider world, and meaningful glances around New England and backward as well. Various threads of evolving relationships, inner doubts, reasonable fears, and spiritual questioning are nicely interwoven into the mystery and keep the reader turning page after page. When at the end the various threads are knotted, a new layer of mystery is revealed. Fortunately, On Wings to Fly is only the first in a series of novels called "Flight and Discovery," and the reader will have future volumes in which to follow Dona Norton's inspired characters.
I give this book four stars because the novel succeeds at what it is meant to be. It does belong to a category called "Christian" books, so character development has that particular religious perspective. Nevertheless, other readers can well enjoy the story and characters from their own points of view.
