Built on the fringes of Central, where the sand meets the endless sea of Ether and the fog never breaks, the Far Shores is an institution dedicated to the pursuit of scientific discovery, remote from Central and a neutral party in the simmering conflicts between cartels. Shrouded in a sinister reputation, rumors of forbidden sciences, and layers of official secrecy, it is one of the most mysterious and isolated locations in Central – and, thanks to radical changes in the political and military organization of Central, it’s also the new home for both the Auditors and the students enrolled in the Program. Thrown into the unfamiliar environment of the Far Shores, Alexander Warner does his best to juggle an evolving protocol, a violent introduction to the realities of fieldwork, and the complexities of attempting to date a Changeling. Katya Zharova, on the other hand, is responsible for keeping Alex alive – an unusual job for an assassin with a penchant for making lethal use of sewing needles.
In the wake of the Anathema raid on Central, alliances crumble and allegiances shift. Open conflict looms between the Director and the Committee-at-Large, as Gaul becomes the target of an Inquiry led by his brand-new Chief Auditor, Alice Gallow. The weakened Black Sun Cartel is consumed with internal conflict, while the ascendant Hegemony starts to coalesce around new leaders. Cartels of all denominations eye each other nervously, uncertain how far the Anathema contagion has spread, and defection and sabotage are rife. In an effort to bolster the depleted ranks of the Auditors, dire and irreversible steps are taken. Old wounds are opened, and old rivalries are renewed, against the background of the expanding power of the Outer Dark. The Mistress of the Black Sun, Anastasia Martynova faces her most difficult trial in the form of an old and forgotten enemy – the Thule Cartel – whose return will upset the balance of power in Central at the very highest levels.
As the war between Central and the Anathema continues to smolder, the Auditors battle an unlikely alliance of eastern Vampires, enslaved Witches, and renegade Operators, working toward an unknown goal and equipped with arcane technology years beyond anything in Central. Emerging from the Outer Dark, Alistair leads a powerful team of Anathema, monstrously transformed and bent on evening the score with Central, the Auditors, and Alex. And, in the shadows, the Church of Sleep stirs, playing both sides for reasons of their own.
The Far Shores is the third volume in the Central Series.
The Far Shores The Central Series Book 3 eBook Zachary Rawlins
Like many other reviewers i have been anxiously awaiting this third book in the central series. it was a relatively quick read, but i would highly recommend you read the other two books before attempting it, there are too many complicated devices to pick up mid way through. There is lots of action and intrigue and the way things progress you get a nice balance of answers to things from previous books as well as new questions for the next book. I can not wait to see what the opening line is for book four...my one complaint is probably there are too many points of view for this book. it made things feel very disjointed as I read through, i would often have to read for a few paragraphs before i could even identify whose POV i was seeing.
All in all a great read and a terrific series for any who like urban fantasy, and at the low price of 99c for over 500 pages, you really cant complain.

The Far Shores The Central Series Book 3 eBook Zachary Rawlins Reviews
Fantastic read. This series is certainly in my top-20 list, possibly top-10.
Characters are interesting and have strengths they put to use and flaws exploited by others.
This installment expands on Anastasia, her cohorts, and others about whom we knew relatively little.
There's a tragic demise that's well foreshadowed (but never really becomes fait accompli until it happens).
There's a bit of HP Lovecraft to this author, and I like it.
Great book... couldn't put it down.
Updated bump
I have been waiting anxiously for this, the third book in Rawlins' Central Series. It did not disappoint. For those of you who have read the first two books, this is a must read. For those of you who haven't read the first two books, you are way behind. Get cracking. Buy all three. Now I am anxiously waiting for book four.
I like Zachary Rawlins's writing and his out-of-the-magical-fantasy books. The previous books were fun to read and refreshing and the third one is no different. The pace is getting quicker and the character introduction (limited as they were) are over.
One other improvement is that Alex is less whiny than before and his interactions with other characters more interesting to read than in the previous books.
The only issue that I'd encountered was that the chapters felt at times like a series of related short stories and less like a book.
Much like George R.R. Martin did in his Game of Thrones series, Mr. Rawlins weaves several points of view and plot lines together. Scene by scene, the mix of action, romance, intrigue, and imagination builds a sense of urgency. There are shocking revelations, happy and sad moments, and much more than the full range of human experience. Best of all, he successfully pulls every plot line together into a thrilling climax. It's a blast, and I highly recommend you read The Far Shores.
I enjoyed the book but I think it could have been better with some editing. Although, I have mixed feelings on that note since it took so long to get this one out. There was a lot of unnecessary text and the occasional mistake, he once referred to ‘understood’ as a monosyllabic response, and poorly written sections that made the already huge list of characters and events even more confusing. Ultimately I enjoyed it though and for me that smooths over a lot of cracks.
Well, I read the first three books quickly. In this (3 of 5) series, the main character, Alex, is still a bumbling jackwagon and it gets to be pretty annoying. There is good action going around but I find myself skimming quite a bit on this one. I know the other two books aren't out yet - and it would be great to see if Alex redeems himself and how the rest of the 'world' plays out - but if I forget about the next release, I'm okay with that.
I loved it. Once I got started reading, I couldn't stop.
The story seems to take place a few months after the end of The Anathema and picks up the lives of most of the important characters of the first two books, especially, Alex, Eerie, Ana, Alice, Katya, Mitsuru and Michael. Emily and Alistair, too. And we learn a lot more of the "story" about quite a few of them. But, of course, there is an introduction of others and a bigger overall picture is provided. Even so, there seems to be much more to the story.
Update now that I have read it for a second time, I still love it. This installment adds a lot more depth to the characters and story. The glimpses into the lives of Alex, Eerie, and Katya leave me wanting more. Katya's character, in particular, is developed and focused - no longer just a Black Sun stooge.
Even after reading a second time, my biggest problem with the book is that the sequel, Outer Dark, won't be available until sometime in 2015!
