This is, without a doubt, the best book about the Ancient Anasazi I have ever read and I have read plenty. History was my minor in college, with an emphasize on American history of the West and the South during the Civil War period and the time of the Anasazi.
This story tells not only the story of their way of life but is a sweet love story also. The obstacles the heroine has to overcome along the way are immense and her bravery and stong will to survive are incredible. Her love for her hero, Kokopelli, is inspiring and her maternal instinct to protect her unborn child are an inspiration for prospective mothers everywhere.
I have always been facinated by Kokopelli. I have numerous images of him in pictures and on jewelry of all types.To adjust to the idea of him as a living, breathing person was at first a little difficult but I soon got so engrossed in the story that I didn't even remember that he had always been a mythical idea to me.
No one really knows if he was real or just a myth so it was easy to go with flow after the first few pages when he appeared. I love the idea that he might have really existed. The way she showed him as a hero, then as a real person with all the normal human faults and failings, then redeemed him at the end,when he left the gifts and especially his gold necklace for the baby he had planned to kill,was a masterful piece of writing.
I am really looking forward to the next 2 books in the series.I was very sorry to read in her biography that she has passed away. I would have loved to seen her have the series carried on the way that Jean Auel's was.
If you enjoy reading about this period of time in the America's, not prehistoric but not early modern Native Ameicans you will be enthalled by this book. I would heartily reccommed it.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was a well told story with characters drawn from the ancient historical times of Americas. There were at times a little too many detailed descriptions to my liking, because I am more action oriented person, rather than one for long narratives. Still, it did not take away from the story. When it got too lengthy, I just simply skipped over that part. Reading the story brought out a lot of emotions in me, perhaps being a female, a lover, a mother, and a spiritual person, I have connected to the story in my own, special way.
I'm so glad I bought this book. Yes, in some ways it's quite similar to Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear series. But it is also a quintessentially American story, told from the viewpoint of a woman who is Native American by birth and all-American in her attitudes. Kwani has all the inner insecurities of many young women, yet all the courage and fire she needs to survive the challenges of both man and nature. The characters are beautifully drawn, from the men she loves to the men who wish her harm, from the women who love and support her to the women who see her as an unwelcome rival. The landscape around her is beautifully drawn. I couldn't stop reading and am looking forward to the next book in the series. And by the way, I tend to avoid romance novels (my usual genre is murder mysteries and police procedurals), but I found the love stories within this book quite engaging.
If you are curious about Native American life before the arrival of Columbus, and you appreciate carefully researched historical fiction, then read this book. Once I started, I didn't want to put it down because the reader is invited to observe a totally different culture in an age none of us can imagine. Their conflicts, jealousies, and gossip match today's society, but each tribe's power structure, hallowed objects, celebrations, and survival skills contrast drastically to current society. Really interesting saga.
Brilliant story that historically captures the north Texas indians. Ms. Shuler has woven a rich intreging story that takes you on a pure journey into the past. I have been to paladural canyon and it is exactly as she describes it. The story of she who remembers will take you into a life that if full of excitement, love, danger, tears, the full range of real life adventures and reality to leave you wanting more. Read the whole trilogy. You will not be disappointed.
I first read this book and it's sequels in the late 90's. I just bought them for my reader as I recalled the stories to be very engaging and full of historical detail. I was happy to read again of Kwani, She Who Remembers and Kokapeli. It was compelling to read about the area known today as Mesa Verde` and about life among the Anasazi people circa 1200 AD. There was a lot of detail but I enjoyed that. There are all the elements of Romance, suspense and clan life. Some may find it liberal in the fictionalized love stories complete with descriptive sex scenes, but I found it a nice touch with all of the historical detail. It keeps me reading well beyond eye strain as I am eager to see what's going to happen next.
I always wondered where Kokopelli came from. I don't know how historical this story is concerning him, but he was large as life in this book. The other characters were very well drawn as well - creating an attachment for the reader. Kwani is a bit too good to be true, but if you weren't strong in those days, you didn't survive. Hard to put down after getting into it as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I'd read this author again.
Schuler did a good job of adding history to the story of a life during the time of the ancient ones. At times reading along became a chore because of the ridiculous way that the heroine was presented and also trying to make one believe that kokepeli was almost a God. Utterly ridiculous the part about his having a rattlesnake do his bidding.
Anyway it was interesting to relive in my mind living at mesa Verde, which I have been to numerous times. I just returned from a 2 week trip to see the grandest of all ruins at "Chaco Canyon" world heritage site which really was a almost religious experience in itself! To imagine living there 1, 200 years ago really brings things into perspective with today's world.
