There are two stories throughout the novel. One takes place in the past. The reader will learn about Erin’s relationship with Nate her boyfriend. My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this novel! I have thought often what would life been like if I had made different choices? The story is plotted with two different story lines. One is narrated in third person about the past and Erin’s experience with her boyfriend Nate. The second story line is narrated in first person. Where the reader will discovery how Erin’s choices in the past impact her current life.
Beth Harbison always has interesting characters in her novels. The story is set in the suburbs of Washington D.C. Which makes it the perfect backdrop for this story? I found it a little hot and steamy at times which is not my preference, but a great read!

I have never read a book of hers before but I will now. This book was well written with a lot of emotion and you can get into these characters. The ending was exactly what I thought it would be and in this case that is a good thing. I will definitely read more books by this author.
love love love love
I was really excited to read this book. The premise that you can meet someone in high school with whom you fall so deeply in love that it transcends decades of living without him is, well, extremely romantic! And I did really enjoy the book, looked forward to picking up and found the ending quite moving. That being said, I wished the author had showed us a stronger bond between Erin and Nate back in high school so that I could truly believe in their love. Both teenage and adult Erin talked about how much she loved Nate and how they were so compatible but I never really saw it. I felt like the book relied too much on sex - either Nate and Erin were fighting because of some melodrama Erin was pulling or they were making up and having hot makeup sex. (I also found it a little unrealistic that at such a young age, Nate was so incredibly skilled. Really? Most high school guys have no clue what they are doing and most girls don't reach their peak until later either, but it IS fiction.) I wish there had been more scenes of them talking and laughing rather than fighting and screwing so I could believe that after 23 years, they'd still yearn for each other based on something other than physical chemistry. I also wish there had been a little more character development of Rick so I could believe he actually stood a chance, but that might have been the author's intention. In any event, it was definitely a gripping read and once I set aside doubts as to whether Erin and Nate's love had been sufficiently demonstrated, I let go and gave in to the romance and fantasy of it all. I also liked the way Harbison developed the two completely different teenagers - Camilla and Roxanne. Roxanne was a pisser!
This is one of my least favorite books in recent years (and that includes boring academic books!). Always Something There to Remind Me revolves around Erin, a single mother who seems to have a penchant for dysfunctional relationships. The plot questions whether or not high school and first love ever truly goes away and whether or not you can rekindle the romance in any old relationship. The plot itself is nothing new- girl and boy date and fall in love, girl loses boy, years later girl and boy reconnect but there's trouble there. Okay, for a Chick Lit book this could be a great plot full of romance, heartbreak, and happy endings but unfortunately, I was so irritated by the characters I couldn't enjoy the story. I found Erin to be a very immature adult and an even more vapid teenager. It made it very hard to get through the book and sympathize with Erin. She seems to routinely make bad decisions and never learns from the past- something that irritates me when reading a book. I will say that women who grew up in the 1980s might find this book interesting as it takes you back in time and lets you relive that period a bit but other than that, I did not find Always Something There to Remind Me a worthwhile read.
This hit home for me, I truly believe you never do get over your first Love! Whether things turn out for you or not there is Always Something There to Remind Me. Definitely a 4 star for me and anxious to read another book by Beth Harbison! Found another favorite author!
Just read this book again for a third time because it resonated so strongly with me. There isn't a lot to say in a review that hasn't already been said except that people seem to be strongly divided. So if you're thinking about reading this, I'd say if you had a poignant first love as a teenager and you never quite got over it, or what it meant to you, this is a book you'll probably relate to and love. If my previous sentence sounds like nonsense to you - "who cares about teenage love?" then maybe you won't like it so much. This is a book about trying to be a grown-up when facing the stuff that f****d you up as a kid, and trying to make a lot of wrongs right, against the odds.
